Alternative to Chlorine Water Treatment Needed

The safety of our drinking water is brought into question with the use of chlorine as a disinfectant.

- Chlorine is connected with the deadly dioxins. It is being phased out in the U.S. due to new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water quality regulations.

- Scientific studies have proven that we inhale and our bodies absorb more chlorine and toxic chemicals while showering and bathing than by drinking the very same tap water.

- Chlorine gas was used in World War I and killed hundreds and thousands of young men who would start coughing blood and hemorrhaging after one strong whiff.

- The American Journal of Public Health, in July 1992, reported that people drinking chlorinated water had a 21 percent higher risk of bladder cancer and 39 percent rectal cancer.

- The President's Council on Environmental Quality (US) stated that drinking chlorinated water would increase chances of rectal cancer by 13 to 90 percent and colon cancer by 53 percent.

- Chlorine is an industrial waste product and considered a tolerated pollutant. B.C. water sheds use about 500 tonnes annually.

- We must keep in mind that children, especially babies, are at higher risk. Children most often consume more water per body weight than adults do and the tolerance levels for these poisonous chemicals are based on adult consumption.

- Health Action Network has made presentations to several municipal councils on the hazards of chlorine and chloramine use in water supplies. Ozone (H(2)0(2) is one of the safe and effective alternatives that we have researched. For more information on the use of ozone to purify water, contact the HANS office at #202-5262 Rumble Street, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 2B6.
