Now, new research shows that joints may remain looser for up to four months after delivery (Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, July 1997). But that's no reason to avoid exercise, assures exercise scientist Kathleen Little, PhD, of Youngstown (OH) State University, who has studied pregnancy and exercise for the past seven years. New moms just need to start slowly, being careful not to overstretch, and should stick to activities that don't require a lot of quick, explosive moves during those first few months after delivery.
