Controlling mania

Essentially mania can be controlled by changing our old idea for a new one: the idea that feelings and thoughts should not be trusted, that they must be judged before they are acted upon. They should be judged by more objective standards than panic or excitement, or that oceanic feeling of urgency. I learned to avoid a lot of mischief by instituting a manual over- ride that involves simply observing my agitated feelings instead of pupeting them. Yes, at first it is extremely painful to resit the impulse to "go for it." In a few years it becomes your own private joke with yourself and your family.
