Oxygen Therapy

Bio-oxidative therapies are sometimes called "oxygen therapies." They involve introducing small amounts of medical ozone, or 30 per cent reagent-grade hydrogen peroxide into the body for prevention and treatment of disease.
Oxidative therapies accelerate oxygen metabolism and stimulate the release of oxygen atoms from the bloodstream to the body's cells. Advocates believe that when the level of oxygen in the body increases, the potential for disease decreases.

They work in two basic ways: as oxidizers, they produce certain species of free radicals which destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, yeasts and parasites without harming healthy cells. As oxygenators, they deliver life-giving oxygen to the body at a cellular level.

Although the mechanism is not totally understood, bio-oxidation also stimulates the body's production of white blood cells (needed to fight infection), helps dissolve cholesterol and stimulates production of tumor necrosis factor, a cancer-inhibitor.

Because they enhance the body's immune system on a fundamental level, they enable the body to heal itself of over 50 diseases, including candida, dermatitis, gynecological infections, diabetes, HIV-related problems, asthma, Epstein-Barr and cancer. Cancer has been treated with hydrogen peroxide and ozone therapy for decades. The rationale behind the use of these therapies to treat cancer is based on three important discoveries:

In 1966, Nobel prize-winner Dr Otto Warburg, director of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Physiology in Berlin, confirmed that the key precondition for the development of cancer is a lack of oxygen at the cellular level.

Nobel laureate Dr James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the DNA double Helix found that "among the most useful carcinogenic agents known at present are several viruses."

Thus, the development of cancer has a viral component that was not recognized before.

The third discovery, which was first reported by the German surgeon Joaquim Varro revealed a peroxide intolerance in tumor cells, suggesting that ozone and hydrogen peroxide may induce metabolic inhibition in certain types of cancerous growths. This was not confirmed in an English language publication until 1980, when an article by Dr Frederick Sweet and his colleagues in the journal Science, introduced laboratory evidence proving that ozone selectively inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Exposure to ozone at .8 parts per million inhibited cancer cell growth more than 90 per cent and controlled cell growth to less than 50 per cent. They also noted that there was no growth inhibition of normal cells. They felt this was due to the fact that "cancer cells are less able to compensate for the oxidative burden than normal cells."

Hydrogen Peroxide

Early cancer research at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas began in the early 1960s. It revealed the value of hydrogen peroxide as an adjunct to radiation therapy for treating cancerous tumors. The antitumor effect of hydrogen peroxide was also studied at Rockefeller University in New York City, which showed that hydrogen peroxide destroys tumor cells by stimulating the growth of macrophages (immune cells that devour pathogens and other intruders) and granulocytes (a type of white blood cell that acts as scavenger to combat infection).

The results of a study undertaken at the University of California at Irvine examined the ability of hydrogen peroxide to kill cancer cells associated with Hodgkin's disease. Cell suspensions taken from 23 lymph nodes of living patients were subjected to low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. The researchers found that a substantial killing of the infected cells took place after only 15 minutes of incubation. They concluded that the findings provide a rationale for investigating new therapeutic modalities to treat Hodgkin's disease with hydrogen peroxide.


Like hydrogen peroxide, it is believed that ozone's anti-cancer effects are connected to its ability to induce the body's release of tumor necrosis factor, which is involved in killing cancerous tumors. In an article published in Lymphokine And Cytokine Research in 1991, doctors at the Department of General Physiology at the University of Siena in Italy found that most of the tumor necrosis factor was released immediately after ozonization took place.

The researchers concluded that "this is of obvious importance not only for the treatment of viral diseases but also for immuno-depressed and tumor bearing patients."

One of the first reports on the successful use of ozone therapy with actual patients was reported by Dr Joaquim Varro at the Sixth World Congress on Ozone in 1983.

Dr Varro is considered a pioneer in the use of medical ozone to treat cancer. He found that side effects and after effects of surgery and radiation can frequently be diminished and even completely eliminated with ozone therapy, offering patients an overall improved quality of life. He also reported that patients are often free of metastasis and tumor relapses for remarkably long periods of time, and the survival time of patients can be prolonged even in cases of inoperability, radiation resistance, or chemotherapy non-tolerance.

Intravenous hydrogen peroxide is used extensively as part of a holistic cancer treatment in Europe and North America. The Hospital Santa Monica near Tijuana, Mexico, founded by Dr Kurt W. Donsbach, treats thousands of patients who come to the hospital as a last resort when traditional medical therapy failed. Dr Donsbach claims that "approximately 70 per cent of our patients are alive three years after their first visit to our facility. Some are cured, some are in remission and some are slowly dying. However, according to their doctors, very few of these patients had more than months to live when they arrived."

Typical Treatments

A typical hydrogen peroxide treatment takes place in the doctor's office. It calls for 30 per cent reagent-grade hydrogen peroxide (at a 0.15 per cent concentration) added to purified water and given as an IV drip for an hour or more. With ozone therapy, the practitioner removes about one-half pint of blood from the patient, applies a mixture of approximately 0.05 parts ozone per 99.95 parts oxygen to the blood with a syringe, and then infuses the blood back into the patient.
Ozone can also be given via rectal insufflation and absorbed into the bloodstream by the intestine, or applied externally as ozonated oil. Some physicians recommend antioxidants like vitamin C or vitamin E to help control what they believe to be excessive post-treatment production of free radicals.

It is hoped that more clinical studies can be done with cancer patients treated by ozone and hydrogen peroxide. The research that has been performed shows that these therapies can be of significant value, either alone or in conjunction with other therapies.

It has been said: "There is nothing more damaging to an -old concept than the truth."
One of the many treatments gaining recognition in Canada and the United States is ozone therapy. It has been used for purification of municipal waters in Europe since the beginning of this century. During the past 70 years ozone therapy has proven to be safe and effective in the field of human medicine. A diverse range of degenerative diseases, including AIDS, cancer, heart disease and diabetic ulcers, is known to respond positively to ozone.

In North America ozone has been a non-starter among medical schools, health researchers and government agencies, but today, medical doctors, tired of the many failures of conventional allopathic medicine, are accepting and incorporating ozone therapy in their armamentarium. This is at risk of harassment and loss of licence at the hands of medical licensing boards (provincial colleges of physicians and surgeons) and government regulatory agencies such as the Canadian Health Protection Branch and the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Ozone is famous for protecting life on earth from the sun's more harmful sections of the ultra violet radiation spectrum. It's infamous as being a harmful byproduct of photo chemical reactions occurring in the industrial and traffic smog that plague major urban areas of the world!

Ozone is naturally generated by electrical storms, rainfall, waterfalls and wind coming inshore from large bodies of fresh water lakes or the oceans. Ozone is the source of that clean, invigorating "fresh air" scent after a storm. Normal air is one fifth oxygen which consists of two atoms and is thus designated as O² (ozone exists as three atoms of oxygen O[³).

Ozone as Therapy

The healing properties of ozone were first discovered in 1840 and were successfully used during World War I to combat battlefield infections. It serves two purposes: oxygenation and oxidation. Because of the added atom, ozone is more reactive than oxygen and quickly oxidizes other compounds. When used medically the extra atom of oxygen breaks off, oxidizing and destroying viruses, bacteria, fungi and cancer cells, leaving O², which increases the oxygen content of the blood and tissues. Any free ozone is reduced to hydrogen peroxide (H²O²) by the enzyme-super-oxide dismutase. The hydrogen peroxide is then reduced to water (H²O) and the extra oxygen is taken up by the blood or tissue cells.

Clinics in Germany and France have used ozone therapy intensively for years. But it was research in veterinary medicine which established the value of ozone in treating humans. Many physicians who are advocates for ozone therapy suggest conventional medical authorities are resistant to ozone because of the powerful influence of the trans-national pharmaceutical companies. Ozone cannot be patented!

Ozone Education

North Vancouver resident, Leo Coutu is normally a mild mannered gentleman. By profession he was an undertaker who should be enjoying his retirement. But he is also an ozone advocate. He becomes very passionate when he tells of the years of frustration he has had to endure because of the ignorance, outright dishonesty and hostility from the medical elite, universities and government health bureaucracies in his attempts to persuade them to recognize the life-saving benefits of ozone and accept its use in treating disease.

Leo Coutu's efforts to educate Canadian physicians about ozone involved bringing to Canada some of the foremost German scientists in the field. He immediately experienced local opposition. Even though the two ozone generators that he imported into Canada were fully declared, with duty and taxes paid, a doctor in the BC Ministry of Health falsely accused Leo of smuggling! Now one of the ozone units gathers dust in a corner of the University of British Columbia hospital. The other is in the possession of a Vancouver doctor who is forbidden to use it by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons under penalty of loss of his license to practice medicine.

The BC government allows this travesty to persist in spite of the fact that the doctor had successfully saved one patient from having a leg amputated and another from having her colon removed, thanks to the healing effects of ozone!

Politics of Ozone

Politicians keep telling us that we must cut health care costs. But woe to anyone who takes these debt doomsters seriously! Any physician who dares to introduce safe, more effective and less costly therapies with the patient's informed consent is subject to intimidating audit from provincial medical insurance services or investigation by the College of Physicians and Surgeons (or provincial equivalent to a medical licensing board) and threatened with loss of licence. This despite the fact that natural therapies always tend to be more cost effective. They can be used by the patient at home, so the health care dollar goes much further.

The Helsinki Declaration of the World Medical Assembly states, "In the treatment of the sick person, a physician must be free to use any new or experimental diagnostic or medical measure, if in his or her judgement it offers hope of saving life, re-establishing health or alleviating suffering."

The Canadian Medical Association and every provincial medical association and society, is a signatory to this humanitarian principle of good medical practice. ·
