Chemotherapy and radiotherapy reduce effectiveness of lymphocytes, which attack cancer cells

Patients with cancer often have depressed immune function, which usually worsens as the disease progresses and is compounded by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer leads to a transient drop in the response of lymphocytes, the immune cells responsible for recognizing and attacking viruses and cancer cells.
