Herb Saunders

Herb Saunders developed a special media in which he was able to see live spirochetes in the blood, and determine what substance could kill them. This enabled him to conclude which antibiotic would work on a particular spirochete. Doctors working this way could be much more effective in treating their patients. Former Congressman Berkley Bedell of Iowa was cured of Lyme disease by the colostrum "targeted" against the spirochete that causes Lyme disease. This was achieved by injecting a killed Lyme spirochete into the udder of a cow three weeks before her calf was born. The cow's colostrum then contained antibodies against the Lyme spirochete. There is no known limit to what can be produced by the targeted colostrum method. It presumably could provide a cure for TB even protection against anthrax or other bacteria. It has been used successfully against cancer in animals. Targeted colostrums have been successfully tested by independent researchers against pseudomonas, salmonella and cryptospiridium and have been shown to be helpful in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

When a colostrum drink was shown to be effective against arthritis, the FDA squelched it. The NCI and the NIH showed no interest in testing it, discouraged the private sector from developing it, and put Herb Saunders, the farmer who developed it, on trial for practicing medicine without a license. So, his reward was that the Attorney General of Illinois sent a swat team in and closed him right down, seizing all his equipment. I still cant quite understand that because, frankly, he was making antibiotics more effective. This type of research might enable us to deal effectively with serious diseases like MS, Lou Gehrigs etc.

Nature's first food for newborns, be they human or animal, is colostrum, the rich combination of immunoglobulins, growth factors and an immune system "vaccination" of antimicrobial factors.

Children who missed the multiple benefits of being breast-fed, according to research done by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), tend to have more childhood diseases because of formula-feeding. Lendon H. Smith, M.D., a pediatrician from Portland, Oregon writes in How to Raise a Healthy Child, "The first milk, colostrum, is rich in both protein and antibodies against a number of bacteria and viruses."

People who were formula-fed tend to have somewhat compromised immune and digestive systems. Colostrum from rangefed cows, free of pesticides and artificial hormones and antibiotics, can help restore compromised systems to optimum function at any age. It makes no difference how early or late in life colostrum is introduced to the system.

Ongoing research that began with Dr. Albert Sabin, known for developing the polio vaccine, (Sabin's polio vaccine and antipolio antibodies that were isolated in bovine colostrum and successfully used in oral administration) continues at major medical centers and universities worldwide. Hundreds of studies show that bovine colostrum works effectively in both humans and "lower" mammals. Even older references occur in Ayurvedic medicine as to the use of colostrum for health purposes. Raw colostrum, which must be refrigerated and consumed within a certain period of time, usually from just one source, is used by Ayurvedic doctors. Even the strict vegan diet of India's Hindu Rishis (spiritual leaders) has included colostrum for thousands of years. In present-day India colostrum is a highly-prized food from a creature considered to be sacred.

A cow gives birth only once a year. High-quality colostrum is taken only during the first 24 to 48 hours after birth, and only from cows which are free of hormones, pesticides and antibiotics. It then must be processed without excessive heat to keep its components biologically active, and contained in a capsule that will dissolve in the small intestine. Processed colostrum, free of fat, whey and lactose, is pooled from hundreds and sometimes thousands of cows and provides a very broad base of immune factors.

Ideally the colostrum should reach the small intestine intact where it does its work. It must be protected from destruction by saliva and stomach acids. Tablets which require a high temperature to form will greatly diminish the biological activity of colostrum's immune and growth factors. The most costly method is to put colostrum in a bovine gelatin capsule. The capsules should be ingested on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with a tall glass of water to help its transit into the upper intestine, then wait at least 20 minutes before eating any food or other supplement.

For best results many natural health care practitioners suggest that colostrum should be "front loaded." The first few large doses to obtain desired results can be followed by lower doses. If benefits diminish on the lowered dose, reverse the process. As the body dumps toxins some people report a healing incident which could manifest as skin eruptions, rashes, indigestion or flu-like symptoms. These symptoms usually disappear in a couple of days. Self-monitoring and making a journal can help keep track of where in the body the colostrum has been most effective. The growth factors in colostrum may create initial pain in areas of old wounds or injuries as they heal. If this becomes too uncomfortable, one may want to cut back on the colostrum for a few days and then resume at a lower dose, increasing slowly back up to optimum levels.

Caution: Pregnant or nursing women should consult a health care practitioner before taking any over-the-counter medication or herbal or nutritional supplement, including colostrum. The immune factors in colostrum may be very beneficial to children especially when they suffer from lingering or recurring viral and bacterial infections. Again, consult a health care practitioner before supplementing a child.

People who are unable to swallow capsules oftentimes choose liquid colostrum, which must be kept refrigerated and has a short shelf life. Too, preservatives are sometimes added to the liquid which may dilute and damage its biological effectiveness.

True colostrum contains almost no lactose so people who are lactose intolerant need to be particular about the product they are purchasing. It must be labeled 100 percent colostrum and not colostrum whey or concentrates of milk whey. Whey is a byproduct of milk, colostrum or cheese and is usually processed with hydrochloric acid and heat. An added caution is that colostrum mixed with other supplements or herbs and additives may provide small benefit.

Since colostrum is a natural food, it can be consumed in any quantity without side effects or drug interactions. However, because colostrum helps heal the bowel, users have been able to cut back on herbal/nutritional supplements. Colostrum can restore homeostasis in the bowel by killing harmful bacteria and viruses, restoring beneficial bacteria and healing the bowel lining. With a better functioning bowel one is more able to use all nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, herbal and other supplements and oral pharmaceutical medications. Medications may need to be reevaluated for dose and need by one's health care practitioner.

For people concerned about weight loss, colostrum contains IGF-1, the most powerful growth factor in the body. Medical research has shown that without adequate amounts of IGF1, the human body during fasting or dieting will burn muscle protein before it burns fat (catabolism). The only way to increase IGF-1 levels in the body is through daily aerobic exercise or colostrum, or both. The IGF-1 and other growth factors in colostrum help burn fat and lean muscle mass.

Weight gain through increased muscle mass can be helped by increasing food intake along with exercise and colostrum. Muscle mass weighs more than fat per volume and for athletes such gain could be very beneficial for performance.

After puberty the body's production of growth hormones is slowed down. Growth hormones are important for the reproduction of virtually all of the body's cellular tissue. Studies have shown that by age 80 most people are producing virtually no growth hormone so that the aging process accelerates. Colostrum's growth factors are the actual hormones that stimulate the normal reproduction of cellular tissue. A few years ago The New England Journal of Medicine report ed that the most effective anti-aging remedy would be simply to replace growth hormones at proper levels to slow, possibly stop or even reverse the aging processes. Colostrum is the only natural, direct source of these growth hormones that are present whole and intact for optimum bioavailability.

Colostrum's immune factors contain highly effective anti-bacterial agents which help reduce and eliminate infections in external injuries (cuts, burns, abrasions and surgical wounds). Colostrum also contains a combination of growth hormones (GH, TgA and B, PDgF, FgF, IgF-1 and IgF II) and epithelial (skin) growth hormone (FgF) which stimulate accelerated healing. The anti-inflammatory agents in colostrum can also help reduce or eliminate swelling and pain.

A capsule of colostrum can be opened and the contents mixed with sterile water or a saline solution to form a paste and applied directly to affected areas and bandaged if necessary. This is reapplied two to three times daily until healing is complete.

People spend hundred of dollars on means to increase the brain's production of its "feel good" neurotransmitter chemicals, serotonin and dopamine. To accomplish this, many use nicotine, drugs and mostly unhealthy and fattening foods like chocolate, which is one of the foods known to stimulate production of these brain chemicals. Relying on these substances to maintain that feel good sensation can be become a daily comfort strategy.

Colostrum is a natural and healthy means of stimulating the brain to release serotonin and dopamine and prolong their re-uptake. Colostrum also activates the release of other chemicals in the brain that affect alertness and concentration. In fact, for most people colostrum is so effective that it is not recommended for ingestion after 3 or 4 P.M., because the energy burst may interfere with sleep.

The antibacterial factors in colostrum have been shown to help prevent and treat gum disease. It can be applied directly to the gums just before sleep for as long as it takes to improve the condition. Colostrum has also been shown to help control any pain before and after dental work.

OF MORE THAN 60 IMMUNE and autoimmune diseases, colostrum has also helped with the following:
Bacterial infections
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Candida albicans
Crohn's disease
Multiple Sclerosis
Intestinal parasites
Rheumatoid Arthritis

Part 3: How to Obtain Properly Prepared Colostrum

Ordinarily the simplest way to obtain the proper antibodies and complement required for your particular medical condition would be to purchase products manufactured by a company that has many years of experience preparing these products. Such products are available for animals from several companies, but – unfortunately – by law their specially prepared disease-specific products cannot be sold for human use, only to farmers who wish to protect their animals from disease cheaply and simply. As a matter of fact, the company with the most experience is so terrified of legal involvement and possible bankruptcy from the FDA and US Department of Agriculture that they refuse to permit their name to be used in connection with this or any other article. For purposes of this article they shall be called Farm Products, Inc.

This is very much reminiscent of governmental restrictions on the use of DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide), an inexpensive by-product of paper production that is a very strong antioxidant and can be used to rapidly relieve pain. Any veterinarian supply house has it for sale to farmers for animals, but humans are not supposed to use it except under physician supervision.

Symbiotics, LLC, Sedona, Arizona, sells colostrum as a nutritional substance guaranteed to “contain a minimum of 30% immunoglobulin content.” Their colostrum is obtained from New Zealand Dairies and advertised to be from “healthy, pasture-fed, dairy cows that are pesticide, antibiotic and hormone free.” That last, by itself, as compared to milk products produced in the United States, is something of a miracle!

In an article by Morton Walker, DPM in connection with Symbiotics,46 (quoting a number of investigators), therapeutic components found within colostrum include a wide-range of substances such as immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, proline-rich polypeptides, leukocytes, lysozymes, enzymes, cytokines, glycoproteins and trypsin inhibitors, lymphokines, oligo polysaccharides and glycoconjugate saccharides, and many other substances. This multiplicity of factors helps to neutralize toxins and counters microbial attacks, reduces incidence of cancer and chronic fatigue, regulates the thymus gland while stimulating and regulating immunities and also interferon production to slow viral activities, boosts immune system and T-cell activity, and so on.

Whether or not standard colostrum products sold in farm supply stores – such as for E. coli – is effective even for animals probably depends upon many factors far beyond the control of the average consumer, such as production method, length of shelf life, bacterial strains used, and so on.

Farm Products’, Inc. standard products for a dairy herd include colostrum preparations against salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococccus, E. Coli, pseudomonas, cornyebacteria, klebsiella-pasteurella, Candida albicans, clostridium, aerobacter aerogenes, proteus, and chlamydia.

A dietary supplement called Biomune OSF Plus™ contains an extract from colostrum and whey acquired from immunologically stimulated cows. This extract (100 mg) is combined in capsule form with a Chinese herb, Astragalus membranaceus (200 mg), in a base of rice powder. The product was developed by Quantum Research, Inc. a biotech research company that develops nutritional supplements and homeopathic remedies, of Scottsdale, Arizona. The synergistic action of the extract with the Chinese herb helps to stimulate natural killer cell (NK) activity. Stanley Olsztyn, M.D., Jesse Stoff, M.D. and other health professionals have had very good results with this product. In a population of 107 participants (59 females, 48 males, average age 53 years ranging from 17 thru 83) initial killer cell activity was 18 Lytic Units (a measure of killer cell activity) and the final killer cell activity was 246 Lytic Units, an average of 28.556 Lytic units increase per month, or an average of improvement as measured by killer cell activity of 1,267% per month.

By comparison, the average NK cell activity in the U.S. population is 20-50, whereas in a healthy population it is 150-225.

Accompanying this dramatic increase in Natural Killer T cell activity were vast improvements in the population of 107 consisting of 50% cancer patients, 30% chronic fatigue syndrome, and the remaining 20% a mixed bag of lupus, allergies, fibromyalgia, blood disorders, hepatitis C, colitis, chronic infections, recurrent infections, autoimmune diseases, and cervical dysplasia/metaplasia.

Average time of treatment was 13.2 months taking from 2 to 8 capsules daily.

It should not be necessary to point out that these are remarkable improvements or remissions of many so-called incurable diseases.

According to Quantum Research, Inc. President David L. Bergsma, no patents were obtained for the whey product component used to stimulate natural killer cell activity, and so their only protection is to maintain their proprietary secret while making their products available as a “dietary supplement” for doctors and lay people.

Former Iowa Congressman Berkley Bedell suffered from Lyme Arthritis disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacteria from a tick usually found on deer.

Lida Mattman, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Biology, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, and author of Cell Wall Deficient Forms: Stealth Pathogens,42 says of ticks: “No state wants to admit they have any Lyme disease. It is bad for tourist trade and therapy is expensive. It is better to let the patient disintegrate into a wheel chair or a mental institution. Actually, this spirochete disease, like the syphillis spirochete disease of the 13th century, has invaded every block of every city in the civilized world. However, unlike syphillis, this [disease] is spread by mosquito, tick, mite, probably household contact, as well as trans-placentally. Like syphilis this disease is the great imitator, attacking joints, heart, brain, etc. We looked at spinal fluid, blood, and synovial fluid of over 500 cases who had symptoms of Lyme [arthritis disease], and found the spirochete of the same genus, in most patients.”43

About 10% of Lyme Arthritis victims do not get well by conventional medical treatments, and Congressman Bedell was one of those. Bedell,2 testifying before Congress, said, "I left Congress because I came down with Lyme [Arthritis] Disease which I contracted while fishing at Quantico Marine Base, and which conventional treatment failed to relieve. After three series of heavy antibiotics infused into my veins over a period of two years, I finally turned to unconventional treatment. My symptoms disappeared and today I am clearly free of Lyme Disease.

"Let me tell you about that treatment. There is a company in our own state of Iowa, Mr. Chairman, that produces a product for livestock by injecting killed germs into the udder of a cow prior to the time the cow has a calf. When the cow has the calf they then take the first milk that the cow gives, which is called colostrum, and process it into whey so that it will keep.

"The theory is that the cow will communicate the disease to the unborn calf, and will develop the antibodies, or whatever, in the colostrum to protect the newly-born calf from that disease.

"After I took a teaspoon of this whey every 1-1/2 hours for a few weeks, my symptoms of Lyme [Arthritis Disease] disappeared, and I no longer suffer from that disease. Because of the publicity of my case, I get frequent phone calls from desperate people who have been unable to get relief from Lyme [Arthritis Disease] with conventional treatment. It breaks my heart that I cannot tell them about my treatment, because no one has been willing to spend the millions and millions of dollars necessary to get FDA approval to market this special whey. I can tell you it cured what appeared to be arthritis in my knee in 15 minutes.

"I have talked to a doctor in Wisconsin who was using this material. He claims 80-90% success in treating patients like me for whom conventional treatments have not been effective. He has now been advised by the Iowa producer that the material will no longer be available because the producer is afraid of the FDA."

It could have been added that the US Department of Agriculture can also act as a strong deterrent, preventing crossing the line from animals to humans.

We hope and pray for a much more mature Department of Agriculture and FDA who will grant permission to renew studies on the use of this already well-developed technology. These products especially prepared for maintaining the health of farm mammals should be easily available for us, too. After all, we’re also mammals, and deserve equal consideration!

A Second Possibility is to Bootleg the Treatment

Herb Saunders, the dairy farmer who cured Congressman Bedell when no licensed physician had been able to do so, was prosecuted on the report of the FDA in St. James, Minnesota by the state prosecuting attorney for practicing medicine without a license.

Saunders had been treating – and curing – humans of a wide variety of diseases for many years, including cancer. For the most part, he used standard products prepared for treatment of cattle, and, when necessary, he used (dead) microorganisms (such as Borrelia burgdorfi bacteria) passed through the cow’s cistern prior to collecting the colostrum.

When all else failed, he’d pass human blood from the sick person through the cow’s cistern. Each person’s blood contains a wide variety of microorganisms – especially when sick – that are unknown, or unacknowledged by most physicians, but are recognized and acknowledged by the cow.

The colostrum thus obtained for the next 10 days was fed back to the sick person just as would be the standardized products made for the use and health of cattle.

According to immune milk pioneer, Herb Struss, Ph.D., colostrum obtained by injecting whole human blood into the cow’s cistern does not produce auto-immune reactions to one’s own blood. “It’s one of the first things we checked,” Struss says.

Saunders was selling bovine colostrum ("first milk") as a potential cure for cancer. "Saunders would sell each patient a cow for $2,500, but keep the cow on his farm. He would inject a sample of each patient's blood into the cow's udder [cistern], and then sell the colostrum to the cow's owner for $35 a bottle. Saunders told an undercover state agent who posed as a cancer patient that he would 'cough out' his cancer within months if he would take colostrum, [and to] refrain from chemotherapy.

"After two weeks of [court] trial – the longest this small community had ever seen – the result was a hung jury. The 6-person jury voted 5-1 to convict, but the last holdout, a part-time social studies teacher, apparently couldn't decide whether Saunders was practicing medicine without a license or offering an alternative type of care that is not medical practice."5

Former Congressman Berkley Bedell provided $21,000 for Saunders' expenses. Attorney Calvin Johnson’s services were free.

Reported by attorney Calvin Johnson, Herb Saunders' second trial once again resulted in a hung jury, reportedly more hung than the first one, with 3 jurors resisting indictment. The district attorney dismissed the case on May 30, 1996, and will not retry Saunders again! (Herb Saunders, now deceased, hiked his price up for blood-injected cistern colostrum to $10,000!)

Saunders approach seems to be well substantiated by the work of many scientists over a period of more than 40 years.

By this second approach, it’s up to you to find dairymen, and to convince them to risk prosecution as they secretly treat you. If blood is to be drawn from you, it should be injected into the cow’s cistern immediately on being drawn from your arm at least once a week for four weeks before the calf is born.

Buy Your Own Cow or Goat

While not at all advising that the law be broken, in answer to the technical questions of how immune milk is obtained, Herbert Struss, PhD suggests that a “springing heifer” be used to prepare the right colostrum for you. A “springing heifer” is a cow that has not given birth to prior calves.

He reports that immune milk is obtained by innoculating into the cistern with the use of a 20 ml syringe – about 5 milliliters of the antigenic or allergenic material is passed through each of the four teats with a cannula (specially designed reed or tube) at weekly intervals, one month before the calf’s birth.

He also reports that those who must use human blood (for cancer, for example) as their antigenic material take about 10 milliliters from the human which is then distributed at 2-1/2 milliliters to each teat, or bovine gland, immediately.

Ten days of milking, at most, is usable, although the first 24-48 hours of pre-milk produced from the cow’s mammary gland after birth is usually defined as “colostrum.”

According to Philip Derse of Derse & Schroeder Associates, modern technology permits extracting many of the active transfer factors from whole milk, long after the colostrum phase.

But we’re speaking here of do-it-yourself methods!

One lady reported that, after being treated by Herb Saunders for Multiple Sclerosis, she’s had no attack for more than 2 years! She also told me of a Multiple Sclerosis support group in North Dakota that chooses not to be identified, as they have their own dairy herd, and have been treating themselves.

Early virological and immunological studies have suggested that Multiple Sclerosis is an auto-immune disease triggered by a German Measles viral infection, also used to prepare the colostrum.

In a 1984 study reported in Medical Microbiology and Immunology19 IgA-rich cow colostrum containing anti-measles lactoglobulin resistant proteases was orally administered to patients with multiple sclerosis. Measles-positive antibody colostrum was orally administered every morning to 15 patients with multiple sclerosis at a daily dosage of 100 ml for 30 days. Similarly, measles-negative antibody control colostrum (< 8) was orally administered to 5 patients. Of 7 anti-measles colostrum recipients, 5 patients improved and 2 remained unchanged. Of 5 negative (< 8) recipients, 2 patients remained unchanged and 3 worsened. These findings suggested the efficacy of orally administered anti-measles colostrum in improving the condition of multiple sclerosis patients (P < 0.05).

A patient had gross, raised blotches of skin Psoriasis that would not heal no matter what treatments were tried.

A liquid preparation of colostrum staphylococcus antibody/complement was taken orally, 1 teaspoon each hour, and a cotton ball was also used to wipe the mixture on the Psoriasis blotches. The wiping on of the liquid was done every time itching occurred, and also occassionally throughout the next few days. Also the oral treatment of the liquid was continued each hour.

Within minutes (literally) of the first wiping the blotches began to disappear. Within a day, all blotches were reduced in size. Within two days, only the longest standing, and grossest blotches remained.

Finally, all marks were gone!

Unfortunately, it seems, the treatment could not be continued to proper end point, and the patient, also having Lyme Arthritis disease and other immune problems, regressed. He is now undergoing trials of specially prepared Quantum Research, Inc. products, and later was successfully treated with a variety of methods by William J. Mauer, D.O. of Arlington Heights, Illinois.

When describing the rapidly disappearing Psoriasis patches to my son, Tony Chapdelaine, MD, his website search uncovered a research paper reporting on the staphylococcus relationship to psoriasis.

One doctor who called The Arthritis Trust of America, asked what was available for treating Lyme Arthritis disease.

Of course, Berkley Bedell’s experience was quoted, and the doctor was advised – almost in jest – that first s/he’d need a milk cow. Surprisingly, s/he answered that she had room for a milk cow at her farm.

So here’s another way: With others, or alone, buy a cow or nanny goat, get it pregnant, and do your own treatment!

Colostrum: A Boost from Mother Nature

As you navigate your way through the maze of supplements that fill the shelves of your local health food store, it is easy to become skeptical about the hype surrounding some of these pills. At the Gerson Institute, we believe in the minimal use of supplements (aside from the necessary Gerson Therapy medications). Go to nature's source first: fresh fruits and vegetables! However there is one supplement that we do recommend, one which is perfectly safe: colostrum.

What is colostrum?

Colostrum is a pre-milk substance secreted by all mammals during the last few months of pregnancy until about 2-3 days following birth. It contains protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, but the two main components of colostrum are the immune and growth factors.

When babies are born, they enter the world without an immune system. Colostrum is Mother Nature's perfect first meal for an infant. "The immune factors in colostrum (including immunoglobulins, antibodies, lymphocytes, and immune enhancers) not only protect the newborn from viruses, bacteria, allergens and toxins, they also serve to 'jump start' the baby's own immune system, writes Lance S. Wright in his book, Colostrum: Mother Nature's Healthy Alternative for Every Generation." Colostrum's other ingredients," states Wright, "also stimulate growth, and promote rapid healing, which is very important considering the ordeal of birth and the injuries it can cause. In all, it is estimated that the ingredients in colostrum work to activate at least fifty different physical processes in the newborn body, all of which are vital to health and growth."

Of course, the source of supplemental colostrum does not come from humans - what mother would ever want to deprive her child of this miraculous substance? Thankfully, cows produce an abundance of colostrum - much more than a calf could ever utilize. Bovine colostrum is not species specific - in fact it is molecularly identical to human colostrum and is up to forty times higher in certain immune factors. Research has revealed that immune and growth factors in bovine colostrum are protected by glycoproteins that allow these important elements to remain intact in the digestive tract - our digestive enzymes do not destroy them. According to Dr. Wright. "This is so significant because nearly 80% of pathogens enter the body through the bowel. So by concentrating most of their forces in the intestines, colostrum's immune factors are able to fight off a large portion of invaders before they get the chance to enter the body."

The History of Colostrum

The use of colostrum as a supplement is hardly new. Rishis (holy men) and Ayurvedic doctors in India as well as Scandinavians have been privy to the health benefits of bovine colostrum for hundreds of years. Indians make a special candy by dropping colostrum into boiling water- this is a big hit with children. Scandinavians eat a delicious colostrum pudding topped with honey to celebrate the birth of calves and good health. "In 1799," states Dr. Wright, "a Dr. Hufeland studied the effects of colostrum on the health and growth of newborn cattle. Colostrum was widely researched and used for its immune powers all over the world up until post World War II [after which time antibiotics and sulfa drugs eclipsed the natural remedies that had been healing people for centuries]. In particular, it was routinely prescribed to treat Rheumatoid arthritis. "In 1950 Dr. Albert Sabin discovered that colostrum contained polio antibodies. He refined these antibodies and developed the first anti-viral vaccine.

Colostrum is a broad-spectrum supplement. In the book, Colostrum, Life's First Food, Dr. Daniel G. Clark touts the many benefits of bovine colostrum. It "rebuilds the immune system, destroys viruses, bacteria and fungi [including Candida Albicans], accelerates the healing of all body tissue, helps burn fat, increase bone and lean muscle mass and slows down and even reverses aging." Clark explains that the immune factors present in colostrum can play an important therapeutic role in the treatment of many diseases and illnesses including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, Crohn's disease, allergies, herpes, HIV and a range of other bacterial and viral pathogens.

Research Validates Colostrum's Effectiveness

Skeptics - beware! Over 2000 published research papers support these claims. Scientists at the Institute of Immunology in Warsaw, Poland made one important finding in 1983. They discovered a small protein called Polyprotein-rich Peptide (PRP) present in bovine colostrum which was shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. But even more impressive is the discovery of PRP's role in the regulation of the immune system via the thymus gland.

The thymus is located behind the breastbone. It secretes thymosin, a hormone that strengthens the immune response. T-cells, which have many functions in the body's immune response, mature in the thymus gland. After we reach adolescence, the thymus gland starts to shrink. This may contribute to the body's difficulty in fighting off invaders such as viruses and bacteria. What makes the discovery of PRP significant is the fact that scientists were able to regenerate "the shrinking thymus gland, so that it may function as it was once capable," writes Brad King in an on-line article entitled "Anti-Aging Nature's Way" (www.healthylivingguide.com). King states that " PRP exhibits a dual role on our immune response: one, it activates an underactive immune system, stimulating it to move into action against disease-causing organisms, and two, it suppresses an overactive immune system often seen with autoimmune diseases like MS, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus and allergies."

Recent studies have shown that bovine colostrum is effective in reducing the incidence of disease from exposure to pathogens such as rotavirus, Campylobacter jejuni, Cryptosporidium parvum, and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (E.Coli).

Leaky gut syndrome also responds well to colostrum. Exposure to pathogens such as viruses, bacteria yeasts and parasites as well as other factors such as poor diet, stress and alcohol consumption cause Leaky Gut Syndrome, resulting in an intestinal wall which is more permeable than normal. This causes poor absorption of nutrients from food, diarrhea and allergies. The immune enhancing components of colostrum are able to fight the pathogenic causes of Leaky Gut syndrome, and the growth factors are able to heal and replace the damaged intestinal cells.

The Role of Growth Factors

While the immune factors in colostrum serve to protect the body from foreign invaders and fight disease, research has demonstrated that the growth factors in colostrum can repair and reverse the damage caused by disease. Studies have shown that these growth factors:

- Regenerate and accelerate normal growth for aged or injured muscle tissue, bone, cartilage, skin collagen and nerve tissue.

- Burn fat for fuel instead of muscle tissue when fasting or during strenuous exercise.

- Build and retain lean muscle mass.

- Repair our body's essential DNA and RNA.

- Balance and regulate blood sugar levels.

- Help burns, surgeries, cuts abrasions and mouth lesions with topical application.

- Control refection and pain associated with sensitive teeth, dental caries and dental work.

- Help regulate blood glucose (sugar) levels - especially helpful for diabetics - reducing their need for insulin.

- Provide greater alertness and better concentration.

- Help regulate the brain's "sense-of-well-being" chemicals (serotonin and dopamine) to brighten our moods.

(Source: www.healthalternative.org)

Genetically engineered versions of growth factors IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) and GH (growth hormone) are now marketed by pharmaceutical companies as anti-aging and AIDS drugs. They are found naturally and in high concentrations in colostrum.

Is Colostrum Safe?

According to Dr. Robert Preston, with the International Institute of Nutritional Research, colostrum is "so harmless, it has been prepared by nature as the first food for infants. It would be hard to imagine any nutritional substance more natural or beneficial." Through hundreds of years of human use, there have been no reported or known negative reactions, side effects or allergies with bovine colostrum. Those with lactose intolerance will have no problems consuming bovine colostrum.

When purchasing colostrum ask these questions:

What country do you get your colostrum from? Does the USDA inspect the colostrum you carry?
What is your USDA license number?
