Most stomach ulcers are the work of bacteria called H. pylori, so antibiotics can often clear them out. But the drugs fail up to 30% of the time. In those cases, a few weeks of eating yogurt may help. Taiwanese researchers tested 138 ulcer sufferers in whom antibiotics had failed; half ate 13.5 ounces of yogurt packed with beneficial bacteria every day for 4 weeks; then all got a second round of antibiotics. H. pylori disappeared in 91% of the yogurt eaters, compared with 77% of the rest. Good yogurt bugs to look for: L. acidophilus and Bifidobacterium.
