MYTH VS. TRUTH
MYTH: Once you have a sore and infected throat, vitamins are of little use.
TRUTH: There is a little-known therapy for sore throats that was described in a brief summary in the September 2003 edition of Emergency Medicine. Biting into and chewing on a vitamin A capsule can bring immediate relief from throat irritation. Buy 10,000 international unit (IU) capsules, and chew up to three on the first day of pharyngitis, or sore throat infection; chew two during the second day; and one a day thereafter as needed. The relief is said to be immediate, although no study was done to confirm the therapy. Limit the week's total course to avoid headaches or other side effects, and keep capsules out of the reach of children.
