Fennel-and-orange salad. Thinly slice 2 fennel bulbs. With a sharp knife, peel and section 2 oranges, removing the skin. Add 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Toss with the sliced fennel, a bit of ground fennel seed, salt, ground black pepper, and 3 to 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil.
